John D.H. Mai

Senior Director of Engineering

Dr. Mai joined AMI-USC in 2017. He is currently working on the translation of spectroscopic imaging and analysis techniques for clinical and commercial applications.

Prior to joining AMI-USC, John was a principal engineer in the Central Hardware Engineering Institute at Huawei Technologies (China) where he was responsible for developing their global pipeline of biosensors for next generation smart phone and wearable applications. His 15+ years of international experience translating R&D to industry also includes director-level positions in the Center for Aerospace Systems Technology and then later at the Electronics and Optoelectronics Lab, both of which are divisions within the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, Taiwan). He was also the deputy chief operating officer at Vialogy (USA), a digital signal processing company that spun out from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (USA). He also worked for the In-situ Exploration Technology group within JPL from 1997 to 2000.

John was a former visiting assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, the City University of Hong Kong (2012-2014). As a principal investigator, he was awarded major HK grants for research into bioMEMS platforms and opto-fluidic devices. He is the co-author of over 20 academic publications covering topics from micro-scale heat transport to rare cell sorting, and other lab-on-a-chip devices.

Dr. Mai is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a PhD in aerospace engineering. Afterwards, he was awarded a Dean’s postdoctoral fellowship for research into the rapid detection of pathogens using bioMEMS technology in the Department of Urology, School of Medicine, Stanford University.  John is a senior member of the IEEE.
