Entrepreneur in Residence
Dr. Schmid brings a wealth of experience in both academia and early stage biotechnology companies, with a career that includes positions held as a faculty member and as a senior executive in early and mid-stage biotechnology companies.
Dr. Schmid began her career in academia as an Assistant Professor of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. More recently she has returned to academia focusing on entrepreneurship – first as a Professor and an Entrepreneur in Residence at Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences in Claremont, CA and currently as an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship in the Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, USC Marshall School of Business.
Dr. Schmid was recruited from academia to join Microcide Pharmaceuticals (Mountain View, CA) in the mid-1990s, where she was Director of Biology and then VP of Research Alliances. Over the next 12 years, Molly subsequently served as Director of Genomics and Bioinformatics at Genencor International (Palo Alto, CA) and Senior VP of Preclinical Programs at Affinium Pharmaceuticals (Toronto, ON). More recently, she was Group VP, Life Science at ieCrowd (Riverside, CA).
In these companies, Molly was part of executive teams that raised over $200M in funding through venture capital, corporate partnerships, public markets, and US and Canadian federal research grants. Her experiences with these companies included two IPOs, two compounds that entered human clinical trials, and several international, multi-year, multi-million dollar corporate partnerships with a number of companies, including Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Daiichi Pharmaceuticals. She has nine issued US patents and several others pending.
Dr. Schmid has served on numerous NSF and NIH grant review panels, and was chair of an NIH/NIAID SBIR grant review panel for several years. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, a Searle Scholar, and a Damon-Runyon Fellow. She is currently a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Microbe, the all-members publication of the American Society of Microbiology.
She is also a member and past president of the Inland Empire Tech Coast Angels, a member of the TCA Board of Governors (2011-2014), and a Senior Counselor for TriTech Small Business Development Center.
Dr. Schmid received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York (SUNY), Albany and her PhD in Biology from the University of Utah.
