Mission Specific Aims and Objectives
The goal of the Cardiac Output Monitor project is to provide a tool for physicians to monitor the circulatory function of patients whose health status does not warrant placement of an invasive pulmonary catheter. The minimally invasive nature of the monitoring technique renders it well suited for pediatric patients.
The immediate availability of the results, the innocuous character of the procedure and its simplicity opens new doors for intervention within and outside of the critical care setting. Physicians would be able to monitor the reaction of the body to drugs and tune their dosage. Physicians would also engage in concurrent additional monitoring, such as ultrasound observation or cardiac catheterization, if abnormal reactions to the drugs are detected.
